A tank holding sulfuric acid at 60% concentration can get very harsh on materials. One wrong alloy choice, and pitting starts within months. Incoloy 825 Sheets solve this problem for engineers who build acid storage and handling equipment across the chemical, fertilizer, and oil and gas sectors. Material selection determines whether a vessel lasts 25 years or fails in five. What are Incoloy 825 Sheets?

Incoloy 825 Sheets are flat-rolled products made from a nickel-iron-chromium alloy, covered under UNS N08825 and standards such as ASTM B424 and ASME SB424. The base composition runs roughly 38-46% nickel, 19.5-23.5% chromium, and around 22% iron, which forms the foundation of its corrosion resistance. Molybdenum and copper additions strengthen resistance to reducing acids like sulfuric and phosphoric acid, while titanium stabilizes the alloy against sensitization during welding. This combination produces a sheet material with high mechanical strength and dependable performance in both oxidizing and reducing environments. 

Why Does Acid Storage Equipment Require Special Materials?

Acids attack metal in more complex ways than just surface corrosion. Concentrated sulfuric, phosphoric and nitric acids attack standard stainless steels by pitting, crevice corrosion and stress corrosion cracking, often starting at welds, flanges or points of gasket contact. A tank that looks intact from the outside can develop pinhole leaks from localized attack spreading undetected beneath deposits or insulation. Storage equipment also stays in continuous contact with acid for years at a stretch, so any weakness compounds over time. Conventional grades like 304 or 316 stainless steel resist mild chemical exposure but fall short once concentration, temperature, or chloride content rises, which pushes fabricators toward higher-alloyed materials for critical storage duty.

Why Incoloy 825 Sheets are Preferred for Acid Storage Equipment?

Excellent Resistance to Acid Corrosion

Incoloy 825 sheets resist attack from sulfuric acid over a range of concentrations and temperatures and from phosphoric acid used in fertilizer processing. The alloy performs in both oxidizing and reducing conditions, a combination few materials handle equally well. This dual resistance keeps tank walls intact through years of continuous acid exposure without wall thinning.

Resistance to Pitting and Crevice Corrosion

Molybdenum content in Inconel® Alloy 825 Sheets blocks the localized attack that starts at welds, flanges, and stagnant liquid pockets. Chemical storage tanks depend on this protection since crevice corrosion often begins where it cannot be inspected visually, resulting in fewer unplanned shutdowns.

High Mechanical Strength

The alloy delivers a minimum tensile strength of 85 ksi and yield strength of 35 ksi in the annealed condition, enough to support large-diameter tanks under their own weight and internal load. This structural stability reduces deformation risk during fabrication, and vessels retain their designed geometry across decades of operation.

Excellent Weldability and Fabrication

Titanium stabilization prevents carbide precipitation at grain boundaries during welding, so fabricators avoid the sensitization that weakens corrosion resistance near heat-affected zones. This makes the sheet suitable for tank shells, nozzles, and internal baffles built through standard TIG or MIG processes. Tank manufacturers can form and weld the material without specialized post-weld treatments in most applications.

Suitable for High-Temperature Chemical Service

Incoloy 825 Sheets hold up to continuous service temperatures around 500°C while resisting oxidation and scaling. Acid regeneration units and process piping that run hot benefit from this stability, since the alloy maintains corrosion resistance even as temperatures climb during upset conditions.

Lower Maintenance and Longer Equipment Life

Fewer pitting failures and less crevice attack translate directly into fewer inspection shutdowns and repair cycles. Plant operators spend less on patch welding, lining replacement, and unscheduled downtime over a 20 to 30 year asset life. The higher upfront material cost pays back through reduced lifecycle spending on maintenance and replacement.

Incoloy 825 Sheets is used in a variety of acid-handling equipment, such as:

  • Storage tanks for sulfuric and phosphoric acids.
  • Chemical processing equipment that comes in contact with mixed acid streams.
  • Pickling equipment in Steel and Metal finishing plants.
  • Heat exchangers for corrosive Process fluids.
  • Combined chemical and thermal load pressure vessel.
  • Components for pollution control equipment like flue gas desulfurization equipment.
  • Oil and gas processing equipment that comes into contact with streams containing chlorides (sour).

How to Choose the Right Incoloy 825 Sheets?

Confirm ASTM B424 or ASME SB424 compliance as well as desired temper and finish of the fabrication process. Ask for mill test certificates providing chemical and mechanical data on the ordered heat rather than merely a data sheet. Use the proper stock thickness and size according to the vessel design as different mills may have different standard stock thickness and gauges. Check the actual operating temperature and acid concentration the equipment is going to encounter as both have an impact on the performance of the alloy. When choosing a supplier, ensure that they have third-party approvals from the Bureau Veritas, DNV, or Lloyd’s Register as these certifications will ensure a consistent quality of work from shipment to shipment.
